Deep Thoughts from a First Grade Mind

With the end of school quickly approaching, the Gort has been coming home each day carrying a backpack stuffed to the gills. Filled with all his ‘work’ for the past year. A math folder. A Spanish folder. Worksheets galore. Art. And, my personal favorite – the one I will store with all of his keepsake belongings – his journal.

The first time I read through it, I howled. At the spelling. The earnestness. The wildly strange imagination. The depicted images. (Why does he insist on styling my hair into a flip when he draws pictures of his family?)

‘What? Why are you laughing,’ he demanded to know.

Because of these gems, that’s why.

My mechanimal is a metal eating rooster. It is strong. It lives in a barn. It buys metal for the other mechanimals. It wakes people up at seven o’clock. It is so loud that people in Russia can here it.

Today was Clay for Kids. I made a fantastic family plaque. I liked the way we made the family plaque. I liked the cool details I did. I liked the awsome way Susan made the bowl on the incredible machine.

After howling at this particular entry, the professor and I tried to determine if the kids had been encouraged to use those particular adjectives. ‘She told us to use juicy words’ the Gort explained.

  1. Precious. Can’t decide which I like better: the distaste for a 100 lentils or aphid ice cream as a remedy for grouchiness.
Balzac Billy?? I just learned something from the Gort’s journal.

  2. I think I am going to dig out our journals for a laugh. I am sure there us some scary stuff in there…. The mind of a 1st grader is so “creative.”
